Compact, tough, and dynamic with a real sting in the tail, the new Grande Punto Abarth is guaranteed to provide driving pleasure with highly developed suspension and braking systems, a smooth six-speed gearbox and all capable of 0-62mph in just 8.2 seconds. And it is all safe too, thanks to standard ESP and six airbags.
Visually instantly recognisable, the wider track, big alloy wheels, lower and stiffer suspension and aggressive front and rear bumpers combined with spoiler and sideskirts ensure the Grande Punto Abarth will not go unnoticed.
However, most of the Abarth treatment relates to the engine, brakes and chassis set up. The 4-cylinder 16v engine delivers 155 bhp at 5500 rpm with a maximum torque of 206 Nm at 5000 rpm. When “power boost” mode is activated, the maximum torque increases to 230 Nm at 3000 rpm, and the electric power-assisted steering gives a sportier feel. There are disc brakes on all wheels, and the front brakes are ventilated with big Brembo four-pot calipers.
The suspension is based on the tried and tested set up of the Fiat Grande Punto but with a thicker front anti-roll bar, 20% firmer springs, and a ride height lowered by 10 mm.
Inside the car the Abarth style continues, with a “carbon effect” central console, an instrument panel with a sporty design, steering wheel and gearknob covered in black leather with red stitching and finally sporty black bucket seats with built in head restraints and excellent lateral support.
